Campaign for affordable housing on derelict Morley site

Morley Borough Independent Councillors have commenced a campaign to bring affordable housing to an old garage site between High Street and Magpie Lane in Morley. The present site, which suffers from regular flytipping, could create an opportunity to develop a partnership with a Housing Association to bring in new homes for Morley families.

Councillor Judith Elliott said, “We are all aware of the problems many young families face with finding a home which they can genuinely afford. Council Housing lists are large and too many people are having to wait far too long to obtain a home they can bring a family up in.”

Leeds City Council housing development officers have been asked to visit the site to see if it could form part of a package to bring new homes to Morley.

Councillor Robert Finnigan said “There may be an opportunity to persuade a Housing Association to accept the land as part of a contribution towards a programme where they can use the lands value to attract funding to build affordable homes. We are taking this matter seriously and we will be lobbying hard for support from across the Council to deliver on our pledge to bring affordable homes to those families on low incomes in the Morley area.”
