Councillors' in allotment bid

Morley Borough Independent Councillors' are exploring the option to bring an allotment to Drighlington after local residents raised the issue at a recent Parish Council meeting.

Councilors' are now exploring the availability of Council owned land and to see if a financing package can be brought to provide an allotment to Drighlington residents.

Cllr Finnigan said "Although provision of allotments falls under the responsibility of the Parish Council, we thought it would help our Parish Councillor colleagues if we started on the early work to deliver on this project. We have identified a couple of sites and we are talking to Leeds City Council officers to see if an allotment at either location is practical and affordable. We should be able to go to consultation on this proposal early in the New Year."

Councillors supported a similar community scheme in Gildersome last year and have supported other allotment projects across Morley.

Cllr Tom Leadley, who grows much of his own vegetables said "This is a proposal we are happy to support. It gives local families an opportunity to grow their own fruit and vegetables and reduce the impact of the credit crunch on hard pressed family budgets. We will be working hard to deliver this proposal as quickly as we can."
