The use of a high technology automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system could be a new weapon in the battle against fly tipping Councillors were told at a recent police meeting. The system, which is also used for tracking criminals, can be linked to local CCTV systems to track the movement of vehicles. Councillor Robert Finnigan, who attended the meeting along with all four Morley Borough Independent Councillors said, “We were very interested in the presentation we received about this new technology. We were told that this system could be used to track fly tippers by using the CCTV systems that exist across Leeds. As Morley has suffered with outbreaks of fly tipping on Rein Road and in Tingley, we were interested in exploring the potential to bring the system to the Morley area.” Councillors were told that future proposals could link the ANPR system to the Town Centre CCTV systems as well as other traffic monitoring cameras and CCTV cameras operating in superstore car parks. |

Councllor Judith Elliott said “This will be a new tool to combat the fly tippers in the future. In the meantime anyone witnessing fly tipping can report the matter anonymously on the Independent help line by ringing 0781 3322737. This information will be passed to the appropriate authorities and we will take action to have the perpetrators prosecuted.” |
