Councillors join “Operation Champion” on Morley Estate

Operation Champion in Action

Morley Borough Independent Councillors joined Police, Housing Staff, Courts Service  Fine Enforcement Staff, Trading Standards Officers and Leeds City Council Street Cleansing staff on “Operation Champion” a multi-agency work programme on the Denshaw and Newlands Estate last Thursday and Friday.

The two days of action saw Police and Housing Staff target anti-social behaviour perpetrators, non-fine payers visited as well as cars checked out for road tax evasion and insurance offences. Other officers worked to clear streets of bulky waste items removing lorry loads of rubbish from the Estate. Crime Reduction Officers patrolled the streets along with PCSOs and Police Officers to crack down on offenders and to offer crime prevention tips by fitting security locks and shed bars.

Councillor Terry Grayshon, who toured the Estate with officers, and spoke to local residents, said, “I have been impressed with the partnership and professionalism shown by all the different organisation involved with “Operation Champion”. Tenants who have been involved with anti-social behaviour have been visited and a clear message sent that their behaviour would not be tolerated. Gardens have been cleared and tons off rubbish removed from the Estate. Police Officers have been targeting road tax evaders and many local residents have had their properties made more secure. The support and co-operation from the Community has been overwhelming and it is clear that they want to work with all organisations that are committed to improving the area.”

Operation Champion is one of a series of programmes operating across the Leeds City Council area where intense targeted work is undertaken by the Police, Tax Officers, Customs Officials, Housing and other Council staff.

Councillor Judith Elliott said, “Many local residents have told me how much they have welcomed this programme. We will be continuing to work closely with local Residents and Tenants Groups to continue the work started over the last two days.”
