Housing scheme for Morley Pensioners proposed

Morley Borough Independent Councillors were celebrating the success of their two year campaign to bring affordable homes to rent for local pensioners.

The Councillors raised the proposal to bring new homes for older residents on the Corporation Street site with Leeds City Council in 2006 and Housing Services have finally agreed a 22 homes proposal on the site previously used by Groundwork for storage.

Cllr Robert Finnigan said "It has taken some time to persuade the Council that this site was ideal for pensioner housing. It is located between the Police Station and Fountain Medical centre and ideally located to walk into town. The flats, which are all two bedroomed, will be allocated to older residents and should perhaps give some Morley pensioners an opportunity to move from council homes which are to big for them into more appropriate accommodation. This should free up bigger homes for families on the housing waiting list."

The proposal will now be formally presented to the Housing Corporation for funding approval.

Cllr Judith Elliott said "These homes will all be for rent at an affordable level. This is the second location where we have succeeded in bringing new affordable homes for Morley residents the other being on Glen Road. We will continue to work hard to improve the number of affordable homes available to Morley families and we are hopeful that a third site in Morley will be announced early in the New Year."
