The Union Jack flag is flying over Gildersome Green following a campaign between Leeds City and Gildersome Parish Councillors. The flag flew from a flagpole erected on Gildersome Green following financial contributions from both Leeds City Council and Gildersome Parish Council. Cllr Bob Gettings, who used his MICE money fund to support the project, said "I am delighted we have been able to have the flagpole erected prior to Remembrance Sunday. The Union Jack is flying to recognise the sacrifices made by those Gildersome residents who have served in the Services in wars both past and present." The flagpole project was discussed at Gildersome Parish Council who supported the idea. Councillor Robert Finnigan said "The idea was to fly different flags to celebrate national events. This could include St Andrews, David’s, Georges and Patrick’s days as well as flying other flags including one celebrating Gildersome village." The flagpole was provided by a local engineering company that also provided the flagpole in Scatcherd Park. Gildersome Parish Councillor Pauline Brown said "We are working in partnership to bring Gildersome residents together to celebrate different events. I hope the flag pole will act as a focal point for future village celebrations." |
