A Belgian glutton could be on its way to Morley if MBI Councillors are successful in their bid to find finance to support the project. The “Glutton” which is a street cleansing machine manufactured in Belgium, was seen in operation this week by Morley Borough Independent Councillors where it is presently being trialled in Leeds City Centre. Councillor Robert Finnigan said, “This new machine was causing a bit of a sensation when it was being used in the City Centre. The machine, which is like a powerful gigantic vacuum cleaner, was picking up all types of rubbish and people were stopping to ask about it. It did a great job with picking up everything from tab ends though to full cans of pop, depositing them into a large wheelie bin.” The machines have operated very successfully in Europe and allow a street cleansing operative to cover larger areas as well as pick up more debris than is possible using traditional sweeping methods. |

Councillor Judith Elliott, who sits on the Town Centre Management Board, said, “This machine would contribute towards a tidier town centre. Its introduction, along with increased enforcement against litter louts, will help to make the town centre a more welcoming place to visit.” The Outer South area Committee and Morley Town Council are considering funding for the new machine along with increased street cleansing staff. If funding can be found then the machine could be operating by the end of the year. |
