£15m Sports Centre Plans on display

Morley Sports Centre

PEOPLE will be given the opportunity to see the plans for Morley's new leisure centre on Monday night before they are submitted for approval.

The public drop-in session will give people the chance to discuss the next stage of the project.

Leeds City Council will build the new facility with £15m of government Private Finance Initiative funds.

The full planning application for the centre will be submitted on May 1 and to coincide with this the public is invited to attend the open drop-in session to discuss the latest developments and hear how the planning process works.

The session will take place from 7.30pm-9.30pm on Monday, where a special 3D walkthrough of the new centre and an update on how the project is developing will be presented to the public.

The latest plans have taken into account all the feedback that has been received from the public, working groups who have met regularly at the centre and local stakeholders since the proposals were first outlined in May 2006.

The previous set of plans have been on display in both centres since January, with centre users and the public giving their own thoughts and views on what they would like to see in the new centres.

The new Morley centre is to be built on the site of the current centre and will have a 25m main swimming pool, a 10m learner pool, a 150-station Bodyline gym, a six-court sports hall, a four-court sports hall, a multi-activity hall and a dance studio plus bar/cafe.

The current centre will be closed and demolished to make way for the new site.

Should full planning approval be granted for the 'New Leaf' centre, Leeds City Council will then send a final business case to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. With its approval work would then be able to start on each site in the summer with the new centres due to open in 2010.
