Decency Work Commences on Glen |
|
Morley's Scatcherd Park has been awarded "Leeds Quality Park" status in recognition of the excellent standard it has achieved The Park has been the subject of a massive transformation since 2004 and had previously suffered years of neglect and under funding. Councillor Judith Elliott, who is also Chairman of Morley in Bloom said "Scatcherd Park, together with Scarth Gardens is looking the best it has for years. It is in no small part due the campaigning of Morley Borough Independent Councillors who have worked to bring benefits to our Town, this one has certainly been a success." Ward Colleague and Morley in Bloom Secretary Councillor Terry Grayshon echoed the thoughts of Councillor Eliiott. " I remember as a child coming into Scatcherd Park and it all seemed a lot different to recent times. Back then It was well maintained and reminded me of those manicured places we see at the seaside. I am pleased to say that we have managed to recreate that feeling once again in Morley, after the Park and Scarth Gardens had been run down for years. The Park is now alive once again and is a credit to our Town, it's all very Harrogate!" New signage has been placed in the Park together with a Flag Pole which will display the Quality Status Flag. The Park has been transformed following a campaign Lead by Morley Borough Independent Councillor who took part in a number of Community Clean ups and Planting Sessions in the Park |
The reduction in crime levels around the Morley area is “no coincidence” says Councillor Terry Grayshon, Morley Borough Independent Councillor for Morley South. The comments follow news released by West Yorkshire Police to show a drop in crime levels in Morley and across the West Yorkshire area. Councillor Grayshon was speaking following news that Leeds City Council are to finance an three additional police community support officers for both Morley North and Morley South Wards from the next financial year. Councillor Grayshon said “It is no coincidence that our approach which has seen more high visibility policing by putting more officers on Morley streets is having a positive impact on reducing crime levels. Morley Town Council has recently agreed to finance additional PCSO's and the news that more officers are to be financed by the City Council is warmly welcomed.” Presently Morley Policing Team is one of the largest in the Leeds City Council area as both Town and Parish Councils finance additional police patrols. Councillor Grayshon said “Crime Levels are reducing because of the action we are taking but we want residents to help is set priorities for the new officers to be appointed next year. Through a partnership which includes local communities, Morley Policing Team, Neighbourhood Watch schemes and the Town and City Councils we will continue to reduce crime levels in Morley but we want to know what local residents think.”

The arrival of a works compound has signalled the start of Decency work for houses on Morley's Glen Estate. The compound which will house contractors working on a council house improvement programme has been constructed on Glen Road adjacent to the Carriers Arms pub. The Compound will be the focus for work to bring council homes up to Central Governments “decency standards”. Councillor Judith Elliott, who is Morley's representative on the South Leeds ALMO, the organisation that runs Council homes across the Morley area said “I am pleased that we are to commence work on the Glen Estate and surrounding areas to bring Council homes up to better standards. The compound has been constructed as a central location for the contractors to store the materials needed to support this improvement programme. When the work is completed then the compound area will be returned to its previous state” Many council tenants have been worried about some of the improvement works and MBI councillors have raised concerns about the amount of cash available to fully complete the programme. Councillor Robert Finnigan said “We are monitoring things very closely to make sure council tenants get a fair deal from the decency programme. I would urge tenants to contact us if they have any concerns about these improvement works.” |
