St George’s Day Celebrations started early in Morley when Morley Borough Independent Councillors raised the St George’s Flag in Scatcherd Park today. The Flag, financed by the Morley Borough Councillors, will fly over the Park for the next two weeks until the St George’s Day Festival is held in Morley on Sunday 22nd April. Councillor Terry Grayshon, who proposed the idea said “We believe it is important to celebrate St George’s Day in the same way St Patrick’s Day is celebrated in Ireland and St David’s Day in Wales. Flying the St George’s Flag shows that we have the same pride in our Country as other people do.” |

The main St George’s Day Festival will be held on Sunday 22nd April in Morley and will commence with a parade starting at 12.30pm outside Morley Town Hall. The parade will finish at Morley Rugby Club where events including an archery competition and Civil War Battle re-enactments and falconry display will also take place. There will be craft stalls, children’s rides and Morris dancing. Councillor Bob Gettings, the Mayor of Morley said “I am delighted that Morley is again hosting the only St George’s Day Festival in the West Yorkshire Area. It is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend. Morley Town Council has given a grant for this event to take place and I am pleased that Leeds City Council has also agreed to financially support the Festival. We can all take pride in our Country and flying the flag for St George’s Day is a symbol of that pride.” |
