Following a resolution by Councillor Bob Gettings, Morley Town Council has agreed to support Yorkshire Day by joining the Yorkshire Society and sending the first citizens of Morley, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, to represent the town at the event held on 1st August in Redcar. Councillor Judith Elliott, who supported the proposal said "It is important to celebrate Yorkshire Day as it is an opportunity to show the pride we have in our County to other counties across England. Sending Morleys first citizens shows the importance we place on the event and Morley's role as a vibrant Yorkshire Town." Councillor Robert Finnigan said "Morley Folk have so many typical Yorkshire characteristics such as loyalty, tenacity and a desire for plain speaking. We wanted to support Yorkshire Day that pays tribute to these qualities. We are aiming to fly the Yorkshire flag on the flagpoles at both Morley Town Hall and Scatcherd Park as well as supporting Yorkshire themed events in the Town." |
